Solemnity of the Holy Trinity

2 Cor 13: 11-13

Finally, brothers and sisters, farewell. Put things in order, listen to my appeal, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you. Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the saints greet you. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you.

To Be Sent

Numerous scriptural references illumine the sublime mystery of the Holy Trinity. One of the most compelling can be found in the final sentence of St. Paul’s Second Letter to the Corinthians (chapter 13, verse 13): “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.”

Scripture scholars point out that this greetingsuggesting joy and kindness, as well as patience and understandingmirrors the mission of Jesus. St. Ignatius was never the same once he understood the implications and applications of this trinitarian prayer—to be “Jesuit” is “to be sent”!

—Fr. Walter Stohrer, SJ is a resident at the St. Camillus Jesuit Community in Wauwatosa, WI.

Prayer

Glory to the Father, and the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
As it was in the beginning, is now, and always will be,
world without end. Amen.

—traditional prayer to the Trinity
